APP2017 Conference Wrap Up
Over 6,500 delegates descended upon the Gold Coast on the weekend for the 27th APP Conference, which provided attendees with the opportunity to gain confidence, enthusiasm and motivation for the year ahead.
The new Federal Health Minister, the Hon. Greg Hunt MP opened the conference with a keynote address providing reassurance that he clearly understands community pharmacy and supports the role it can play in the wider healthcare system. The Minister paid tribute to his Grandmother who was a pharmacist and shaped his view of pharmacy.
The Minister was also present to congratulate and award the all-female Pharmacy of the Year Finalists, who showcased the diverse and professional ways in which they support their community and work to drive innovative pharmacy practices. Congratulations to Lucy Walker Chemmart Pharmacy, Goondiwindi on being named the 2017 Guild Pharmacy of the Year!
One of the main themes of the conference was ‘capturing and utilising your pharmacy data’. Adam Spencer showed us the power of data, and many educational sessions highlighted how to read, review and react to what your pharmacy data is telling you. Delegates also had the opportunity to receive free tools to extract their own dispensary data.
Plenary sessions had a clear focus for the future of pharmacy. Maggie Zhou and John O’Loghlen from Alibaba blew us away with the size and scale of the growing Chinese retail market and how pharmacy can participate; and Mark McCrindle presented the 2017 Healthy Futures Report, which showed that consumers are positive about the changing role of community pharmacists in providing more healthcare services. Futurist Morris Miselowski reassured us that although change is happening at a rapid rate, we can embrace it, and prosper from it.
The social events were once again a buzzing opportunity to connect and network with colleagues and suppliers. With the Welcome Reception opening a day earlier on the Thursday evening, it provided more time for delegates to make their way through the 450 stands in the Trade Exhibition – the biggest in the events history, while the ever-popular Street Party headlined by renowned Australian DJ, Havana Brown was a true celebration, pharmacy style!
