To meet the continuing change in the community pharmacy landscape, The Pharmacy Guild of Australia will provide a practical checklist to managing and implementing efficient staff rostering, at APP2017.
APP Chairman Kos Sclavos said that rostering staff is one of the most difficult tasks in managing a pharmacy, due to service, security, legal and financial requirements.
“One of the key considerations in developing a roster is of course, wages. Due to the continuing effects of price disclosure and the distortive nature of some high cost medicines, pharmacies must change from the traditional method of calculating wages based on a percentage of turnover, to that as a percentage of gross profit.
“Furthermore, to ensure sustainable staff rostering, this session will breakdown the importance of a wages budget, and how to create a compliant, cost effective and easily replicated wages budget,” Kos said.
As pharmacy margins continue to reduce, it is more important than ever before to ensure staff productivity is increased.
“Pharmacies must start by hiring the right staff. This session will outline the seven mandatory considerations when hiring new staff.
“Having said that, it’s important to note that reduced costs do not mean increased efficiency! Pharmacies need to also consider the productivity gain from highly qualified staff to that of entry level staff.
“To maximise productivity, pharmacies must measure, review and adjust budgets, staffing, and rosters to ensure maximise gains,” Kos said.
