APP2026 to spotlight Irish and European pharmacy reforms driving expanded clinical practice

Media Release
16 October 2025

The Australasian Pharmacy Professional Conference & Trade Exhibition (APP2026) is set to welcome two eminent international speakers from Ireland, who will share insights into the transformative changes underway in Irish community pharmacy and provide an update of changes in pharmacist scope of practice across key European markets.

Clare Fitzell, who has the dual positions of President of the Pharmaceutical Group of the European Union and Secretary General of the Irish Pharmacy Union, and Tom Murray, President of the Irish Pharmacy Union and Treasurer of the World Pharmacy Council, will headline two key sessions and participate in key panel sessions at APP2026.

Their presentations come in the wake of the recently announced Irish Community Pharmacy Agreement 2025, which significantly expands the role of pharmacists in Ireland’s healthcare system.

Under this landmark agreement, Irish pharmacies will deliver a range of enhanced services aimed at improving patient outcomes, including:

  • A Common Conditions Service, allowing pharmacists to prescribe treatments for a variety of everyday health issues
  • Participation in the national pneumococcal vaccination programme
  • Greater involvement in public health initiatives, such as boosting uptake of the national Bowel Screen service to support early detection and prevention

APP2026 Convenor Kos Sclavos AM said the inclusion of these speakers is a major drawcard for delegates.

“Ireland is leading the way in Europe demonstrating how community pharmacy can be a cornerstone of primary healthcare,” Mr Sclavos said.

“The reforms being implemented through the Irish Community Pharmacy Agreement are bold, evidence-based, and focused on patient care. We’re thrilled to have Clare and Tom join us at APP2026 to share their experiences and insights. Their presentations will undoubtedly spark important conversations about the future of pharmacy in Australia.”

In her session titled ‘European Community Pharmacy: Innovations and Lessons for Australia’, Clare Fitzell will explore how European pharmacy models are evolving to meet modern healthcare demands, and which innovations Australia should consider adopting as it moves toward full scope of practice.

“There are many elements of pharmacy practice in parts of Europe that would be ideal in the Australian setting. At recent APPs we have heard about the USA and UK markets – APP2026 presents an opportunity for pharmacists to be inspired by European changes,” Mr Sclavos added.

Tom Murray’s session, ’Community Pharmacy in Ireland’, will provide a comprehensive update on Ireland’s evolving pharmacy landscape, including remuneration models, government-funded professional services, and expanded clinical roles for pharmacists.

Mr Murray will also participate in a panel session titled ‘Strengthening community pharmacy’s role in primary care’ which will explore how community pharmacy can play a stronger role in primary care through the delivery of clinical services and innovative programs such as screening and diagnostic testing.

“These sessions are not just about learning what’s happening overseas,” Mr Sclavos added. “They’re about understanding what’s possible here in Australia. With the right support and vision, our pharmacists can play an even greater role in delivering accessible, high-quality care.”

APP2026 will take place on the Gold Coast from 12-14 March 2026, bringing together thousands of pharmacy professionals, industry leaders, and policymakers to explore the future of pharmacy in Australia and beyond.

Tier 1 registration, which offers delegates a saving of up to $250 on full registration, is available until 31 October. Book now to secure your registration at the best price!
