APP2026 program now available

APP Conference Convenor, Kos Sclavos AM, has today announced the launch of the program for next year’s Australasian Pharmacy Professional Conference and Trade Exhibition (APP2026), which is being held from 12–14 March 2026 on the Gold Coast.

Centred around the conference theme of Beyond the Script, the program will deliver a diverse and engaging mix of content to encourage innovation, critical thinking, and a patient-centred approach. Conference streams include:

  • business, innovation and leadership
  • clinical pharmacy
  • product updates
  • rural pharmacy and Indigenous health
  • harm minimisation
  • early career pharmacists
  • cultural engagement, and
  • professional practice

“This year’s theme, Beyond the Script, is a call to action for pharmacy professionals to adapt, innovate, and lead with compassion,” said Mr Sclavos. “The program was designed to drive the next chapter of community pharmacy, equipping delegates with the insights and inspiration to deliver even greater value to their patients and communities.”

“The program offers something for everyone — from students and early career pharmacists to experienced owners and industry leaders.”

Program highlights
APP2026 kicks off with the Opening Plenary, where participants will reflect on key milestones from the past year, hear about the Guild’s strategic priorities, and celebrate excellence in community pharmacy through industry awards.

Business, innovation and leadership stream sessions will provide delegates with insights into the challenges and opportunities shaping the profession and help unlock their potential. This is supported with international perspectives from Ireland and Europe, with guest speakers Clare Fitzell and Tom Murray exploring how pharmacy innovation and reform overseas can inspire Australia’s continued progress.

Celebrated athlete Jana Pittman will deliver the Ann Dalton Address, inspiring delegates with insights from her experiences across the realms of sport and medicine. While founder of the Alannah and Madeline Foundation, Walter Mikac AM, will share his remarkable story of turning unimaginable personal tragedy into a message of hope, resilience, and purpose in the Alan Russell Oration.

For those wanting to expand their clinical knowledge, sessions on osteoarthritis care, iron therapy, acne management, type 2 diabetes care, wound care, airway wellness, and more will provide practical insights, evidence-based strategies, and valuable takeaways to enhance patient outcomes and support professional growth.

In addition to the main program, the pre-conference workshops on Wednesday 12 March will allow delegates to start their conference experience with immersive learning in full scope of practice, immunisation, and business transformation. “These workshops provide a great opportunity for hands-on learning,” said Mr Sclavos.

Walter Mikac AM to present inspiring Alan Russell Oration at APP2026

APP Conference Convenor, Kos Sclavos AM, is excited to announce Walter Mikac AM will present the Alan Russell Oration at the Australasian Pharmacy Professional Conference and Trade Exhibition (APP2026). Sponsored by PDL, his speech ‘Resilience for life: turning tragedy into purpose’ will offer a renewed perspective on life’s challenges.

“We are delighted to welcome Walter Mikac to APP2026,” said Mr Sclavos. “His ability to turn unimaginable personal tragedy into a message of hope and purpose will deeply resonate with our delegates.”

Walter Mikac AM is an experienced pharmacist whose life changed forever following the tragic loss of his wife and two daughters in the Port Arthur massacre. In the years since, he has become a speaker, author, advocate for positive change, and founder of The Alannah & Madeleine Foundation, a national Australian charity dedicated to keeping children and young people safe from violence and trauma. Through his work, Walter encourages others to find strength, meaning, and motivation in even the most difficult circumstances.

Walter joins an impressive speaker lineup, including celebrated athlete Jana Pittman, and AI expert Adam Spencer. Jana’s session will cover her journey across sport and medicine and offer practical wisdom for overcoming challenges to achieve success in any field, while Adam will show delegates how to make AI work for you and your pharmacy.

APP2026 to spotlight Irish and European pharmacy reforms driving expanded clinical practice

The Australasian Pharmacy Professional Conference & Trade Exhibition (APP2026) is set to welcome two eminent international speakers from Ireland, who will share insights into the transformative changes underway in Irish community pharmacy and provide an update of changes in pharmacist scope of practice across key European markets.

Clare Fitzell, who has the dual positions of President of the Pharmaceutical Group of the European Union and Secretary General of the Irish Pharmacy Union, and Tom Murray, President of the Irish Pharmacy Union and Treasurer of the World Pharmacy Council, will headline two key sessions and participate in key panel sessions at APP2026.

Their presentations come in the wake of the recently announced Irish Community Pharmacy Agreement 2025, which significantly expands the role of pharmacists in Ireland’s healthcare system.

Under this landmark agreement, Irish pharmacies will deliver a range of enhanced services aimed at improving patient outcomes, including:

  • A Common Conditions Service, allowing pharmacists to prescribe treatments for a variety of everyday health issues
  • Participation in the national pneumococcal vaccination programme
  • Greater involvement in public health initiatives, such as boosting uptake of the national Bowel Screen service to support early detection and prevention

APP2026 Convenor Kos Sclavos AM said the inclusion of these speakers is a major drawcard for delegates.

“Ireland is leading the way in Europe demonstrating how community pharmacy can be a cornerstone of primary healthcare,” Mr Sclavos said.

“The reforms being implemented through the Irish Community Pharmacy Agreement are bold, evidence-based, and focused on patient care. We’re thrilled to have Clare and Tom join us at APP2026 to share their experiences and insights. Their presentations will undoubtedly spark important conversations about the future of pharmacy in Australia.”

In her session titled ‘European Community Pharmacy: Innovations and Lessons for Australia’, Clare Fitzell will explore how European pharmacy models are evolving to meet modern healthcare demands, and which innovations Australia should consider adopting as it moves toward full scope of practice.

“There are many elements of pharmacy practice in parts of Europe that would be ideal in the Australian setting. At recent APPs we have heard about the USA and UK markets – APP2026 presents an opportunity for pharmacists to be inspired by European changes,” Mr Sclavos added.

Tom Murray’s session, ’Community Pharmacy in Ireland’, will provide a comprehensive update on Ireland’s evolving pharmacy landscape, including remuneration models, government-funded professional services, and expanded clinical roles for pharmacists.

Mr Murray will also participate in a panel session titled ‘Strengthening community pharmacy’s role in primary care’ which will explore how community pharmacy can play a stronger role in primary care through the delivery of clinical services and innovative programs such as screening and diagnostic testing.

“These sessions are not just about learning what’s happening overseas,” Mr Sclavos added. “They’re about understanding what’s possible here in Australia. With the right support and vision, our pharmacists can play an even greater role in delivering accessible, high-quality care.”

Only one week until APP2025!

The final countdown has begun! With just one week until the 2025 Australian Pharmacy Professional Conference and Trade Exhibition (APP2025), anticipation is at an all-time high. From 20-22 March 2025, the Gold Coast will welcome members of the pharmacy industry from across Australia and the world to kick off the Southern Hemisphere’s largest pharmacy conference.
