PhD Candidate, University of Sydney

Alex Burke

Alex Burke is a proud Wiradjuri/Dharug man hailing from Western Sydney. Pharmacy as a career path came to him unexpectedly after some encouragement from his mother to attend the inaugural Sydney Pharmacy Indigenous Camp at the University of Sydney in 2013, and he has never looked back. Alex graduated with a Bachelor of Pharmacy with First Class Honours, which after being told was something that would be out of reach for him, was a great achievement and goes to show that with a little passion and dedication, anything can be in reach. Whilst undertaking his degree, Alex felt quite isolated being the only First Nations male in pharmacy. Constantly throughout his degree he questioned whether enough was being done to get mob interested in a career in pharmacy and whether enough was being done to make the university a safe place for First Nations people to study. Alex saw a great need for health professionals, especially pharmacists, to receive further education about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and Indigenous Health, so he commenced his PhD in cultural safety training of Pharmacists in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.
