Associate Professor Dr John Smithson
Dr John Smithson is an accomplished healthcare professional with over 30 years of clinical experience and more than 20 years in academic leadership. A dual qualified senior registered pharmacist and registered nurse, Dr Smithson brings a unique and comprehensive perspective to healthcare education, clinical service, and policy advancement. His career spans regional hospitals, community pharmacy, aged care, and academia, with a consistent focus on improving patient outcomes, expanding professional scope of practice, and delivering high quality, practice-ready graduates. Dr Smithson is currently the Associate Professor and Head of Pharmacy at James Cook University (JCU), where he leads one of Australia’s most innovative pharmacy programs. Under his leadership, JCU Pharmacy has expanded to three regional campuses, transitioned to a trimester model, and become a national leader in prescribing education for pharmacists. He is the architect of Australia’s first Full Scope of Practice and Prescribing Program for Pharmacists, now being delivered across Queensland, Northern Territory and soon to include Western Australia.
