Community Pharmacist, Carters Pharmacy Gunnedah

Kirra Natty

Kirra Natty is a proud Gamilaraay woman who always wanted to give back to her community but was not quite sure how. After identifying disparities and deficiencies in culturally safe healthcare in rural communities, she decided to work in the front line of pharmacy to improve outcomes for mob and started working in a pharmacy after school. Completing a Certificate III in community pharmacy allowed her to interact with patients and staff within a community pharmacy setting and she gained the confidence to start a career journey in health, working her way up through all aspects of pharmacy, which was quite intimidating as a young aboriginal girl growing up in the bush. Kirra could see that community pharmacy was a connecting factor along the clinic, hospital, and community patient journey/continuum and after much encouragement from my her then boss and mentor, she enrolled in university to undertake further training. She applied for and was awarded a scholarship under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Pharmacy Scholarship Scheme, which enabled her to graduate as a pharmacist in 2023. Kirra is proud to work alongside her mob as a qualified pharmacist and has moved back on country to do so. She is also proud of the three-monthly Elders Cup of Tea and Yarn Up which was started alongside her local Healthwise. This is a safe space where health issues and medications are discussed interactively, so that mob feel like they can comfortably access community pharmacy to address their health needs with someone safe/friendly and without shame. Kirra hopes to eventually own her own pharmacy.
